The same applies to furniture made of birch plywood, where the shelves are made of numerous thin wooden boards glued together crosswise. Their edges are often left natural or are only finished with a clear varnish so that the attractive striped look of the material is still visible.

Even more stable than shelves made of wood and wood materials are models in which the basic framework is made of a metal such as steel or stainless steel. These shelves can also add a decorative shiny accent to a room. They are usually equipped with shelves made of a different material such as wood to make them look homey. Also available from some manufacturers are shelves with a base frame made of wood and shelves made of metal.
